Celebrate National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day: August 4!

Did you know that the chocolate chip cookie was invented in 1930 by Ruth Graves Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Restaurant? While baking, she used an ice pick to break pieces from a chocolate bar into small “chips” and added them to her cookie dough. The recipe quickly became a favorite with customers and soon gained popularity across the country. As demand grew, Nestlé recognized there was a market for chocolate chips and introduced Nestlé Toll House Morsels, making it easier for home bakers to create the famous cookies. By 1940, ready-to-bake chocolate chip cookies were available, bringing this delicious treat to even more families. In 1963, Chips Ahoy! became the first shelf-stable chocolate chip cookie sold in stores, and in 1984, Ben & Jerry’s introduced chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream—a favorite dessert for many.
